Goals and objectives of the UNDP/GEF-Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of Russia project “Mainstreaming Biodiversity Conservation into Russia’s Energy Sector Policies and Operations”.
- Improve biodiversity in Russia’s industrial regions;
- Assist in establishing a system for biodiversity monitoring and testing of environment-saving technologies in oil producing, coal mining and hydropower production;
- Assist in adopting legislative and regulatory documents on biodiversity conservation in the energy sector.

Pilot areas: Nenets Autonomous Оkrug, Sakhalin Oblast, Astrakhan Oblast, Republic of Kalmykia, Amur Oblast, Volgograd Oblast, Republic of Khakassia, and Kemerovo Oblast.
Main Partners: Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of Russia; subordinate federal services and federal agencies; executive government agencies in demo areas performing governance functions in the area of nature management and ecology; energy sector companies: LUKOIL, Sakhalin Energy Investment Company, Ltd., RusHydro, SN-Invest, SUEK-Kuzbass, SUEK-Khakassia, Kuzbasskaya Toplivnaya coal mining company, Yuzhny Kuzbass coal mining company, SDS-Ugol coal mining company, as well as NGOs and social agencies.
The aim of the workis to mainstream state-of-the-art ecology approaches and technologies that contribute to biodiversity conservation into corporate practices of Russia’s energy sector companies. Furthermore, the Project’s deliverables will be used to shape federal and regional biodiversity conservation policies including updating requirements to EIA, state environmental impact assessment, industrial environmental control, rehabilitation of damaged and oil-contaminated lands as well as requirements on compensation of damage to the environment and biodiversity.
